If we believed everything the carmakers told us, it'd be hard to determine whether BMW, Audi or Mercedes-Benz in fact had the 'best' central command interface on the market. All three automakers claim superiority, and all three have recently updated their systems to varying degrees.
Audi's latest Multi Media Interface (MMI) variant will hit our roads when their upcoming Q5 model goes on sale. It's coming with a DVD drive, hard-drive and even an NVIDIA graphics chip. The latter feature is commonly found in gaming or editing computers designed for high levels of graphical performance. A new joystick control retains the operating principle of the former MMI system, though its more precise control now allows easy navigating throughout the map screen, for instance. The system displays through a 7-inch TFT display that boasts 800x480 pixel resolution and promises crisp and vibrant readouts. Navigation maps are now available presented in 3D, with major landmarks and topographies shown for perspective. Additionally, the navigation system is able to compute the spelling of complete words, making voice-entry of a destination even easier. Movie and DVD audio playback are possible too, and the new MMI system can also play tunes from CDs and SD cards in a variety of formats. Audi says their latest generation of MMI will set new standards with its attractive display layout, high resolution presentation, smooth animation and cross fading. The Q5 and Audi's next-gen MMI system are expected on sale early this year.
