Audi has always led the way with
technology like all-wheel-drive, so when it announces its first all-electric
Audi prototype, people take notice. It's called the Audi e-tron. This is the Audi Toronto
drivers will drive into a future of technological prowess and a low
environmental impact. It's just a concept today, but the first e-tron inspired
model should be in our showroom at Audi Midtown Toronto
sometime near the middle of 2019. Get ready for the cars and SUVs that will be
electrifying the future.
The heart of the e-tron is its
all-electric drivetrain. Inspired by the Audi e-tron FE04 racer that just won the third season of the Formula E
racing series, this motor puts a premium on performance combined with quiet
luxury. The first generation of this motor will appear in the production e-tron
Quattro SUV, which has been designed from the ground up to be an electric vehicle.
This means no compromises need to be made to fit the electric drivetrain around
the needs of the driver and passengers.
The electric motor is powered by a
95kWh lithium-ion battery pack sending power to all four wheels as needed via
Audi's legendary Quattro all-wheel-drive system. It should be possible to
charge this battery to about 80 percent of its full range of over 200 miles in
just 30 minutes. This is possible because the e-tron is the first production
electric vehicle that's compatible with 150-kilowatt charging. Compare that
with Tesla's superchargers, which only operate at 120 kilowatts. The e-tron
should charge faster and get better range for every unit of time spent
Other Technological Leaps
A vehicle this forward-looking, with a
clean-sheet-of-paper approach to car design, should be able to throw away the
old blueprints and create a whole new form factor. And that's just what the
e-tron does. Emblematic of this, the e-tron sheds side view mirrors in favour
of much more aerodynamic cameras. Each camera's view appears in a 7-inch OLED
screen at the forward top edge of each door, so you'll still be able to look
where you're used to. But these cameras will offer three distinct modes for
turning, parking, and highway driving. The driver can also zoom in and out of
the cameras' view. It's 100-year-old technology re-thought from the ground
up--just like the rest of the e-tron.
When you drive an electric car, you
realize how much of the ambient noise of a regular car comes from the engine.
The e-tron enhances that sense of calm and quiet via soundproofing in all areas
that are prone to transmitting noise into the interior. This makes it the
perfect setting for the optional Bang & Olufsen premium stereo system with
its 16 speakers and 705-watt amplifier. This sound system reproduces music
exactly the way it sounded when it was recorded, so the e-tron's cabin is the
perfect place to listen to it. It's no wonder the e-tron's interior made its
world debut on the stage of the Royal Danish Playhouse in Copenhagen, since the
e-tron's passenger cabin is a perfect stage for music in its own right.
